Our Caller - Lynette Nurser
Lynette started dancing, at the age of 15, in 1984 at Pine Rangers Square Dance Club, Clontarf. Taught to dance by Alan Leighton, it wasn't long before she realised that she wanted to do more than dance and very quickly took up Calling and Round Dance Cueing. When Alan retired from active calling in 1985 to persue other interests, the opportunity to call regularly presented itself. Within a year, Lynette was calling for Pine Rangers and also running her own Round Dance Club, Sunshine Rounds, which ran for 10 years.
In 1986, Lynette won the Qld Callers Association's Amateur Callers Contest.
Lynette has cued and called for many weekend festivals over the last 36 years, including the Gympie Goldrush, Summer Holiday and Winter Wonderland. One of the highlights of her dancing career was being asked to join the East Meets West team - Brian Hotchkies, Barry Wonson, Kevin Kelly and Steve Turner as their Cuer for the weekend dances. Having travelled to many locations to work with the "Boys" over the years, Lynette topped it off in 2011 as the Round Dance Cuer for Brian's Hotchkies special Anniversary Dance to celebrate 50 years of Calling.
A recent highlight for Lynette was being awarded her Silver Microphone Award for 25 years of Calling at the 60th National Square Dance Convention in Deloraine, Tasmania in April 2019.
Lynette has two daughters - Felicity (23) and Amelia (20). Lynette called for Pine Rangers for 15 years and only closed the club when Felicity was diagnosed with Leukaemia as a 4 year old. Thankfully, Felicity responded to treatment and with the pressures of family life easing, Lynette realised that she was missing club calling.
In 2009, Lynette started Sunshine Square & Round Dance Club. Back teaching in her old hall at Clontarf, it was like she had never been away. In 2012 Lynette became Co-Caller for a new Club called Taigum Twirlers which danced at the Taigum State School on Saturday evenings. Eventually this club expanded and added an afternoon session to the teaching schedule.
In 2015 Taigum Twirlers moved moved to the Clontarf Community Hall and once again expanded the number of sessions being taught. This venue has a beautiful wooden floor which enabled Lynette to return to her other passion of teaching and Cueing Round Dancing.
A successful Saturday morning Round Dance class was established. This lass now dances Phase 3 Rounds with new dances being taught every week. A Thursday evening beginners class was added in 2017 along with a second Thursday evening Beginners class in 2019.
A new Round Dance beginners class was also added to Friday evenings in 2020.
Along with her husband Mark, Lynette now teaches four Round Dance sessions a week, from Beginners to Phase 4 and two Square Dance sessions. All of these sessions are well attended by extremely supportive dancers who love their club.
